CONSERVATION INTERNATIONAL‘S VITAL RESERVES IN THE AMAZON: PROTECTING IRRECOVERABLE CARBON, BIODIVERSITY AND PEOPLE

Less than 14% of the Earth’s land surface holds 75% of the planet’s irrecoverable carbon — and provides habitat for 91% of vertebrate species. Protecting these areas is simultaneously a climate priority, a biodiversity emergency and a condition of survival for the peoples who depend on them.
It is from this scientific reality that Conservation International launched in 2022, with the support of the French Government and the French Global Environment Facility (FFEM), the Vital Reserves in the Amazon project. The goal: to protect more than 7 million hectares across four countries — Bolivia, Ecuador, Guyana and Peru — by supporting Indigenous Peoples and developing innovative financial mechanisms to sustain these conservation areas. Elise Rebut, Director of Conservation International France, presents in this episode the Vital Reserves project, emblematic of the mechanisms and levers available to protect key ecosystems of our planet.
EVALUATING NATURE-BASED SOLUTIONS PROJECTS: A PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN THE FRENCH COMMITTEE OF THE IUCN AND ENGIE

As part of its partnership with the French Committee of the IUCN, and to formalise its commitments within Act4Nature International, ENGIE set itself the goal of having 10 projects recognised as Nature-based Solutions (NbS) under the IUCN Global Standard for Nature-based Solutions™ by end 2025. By meeting the rigorous scientific criteria of this Standard, ENGIE is demonstrating strong ambition and emerging as a pioneer in the private sector. We explore the contours of this partnership with Elsa Favrot-Monier, Head of the Nature & Society unit within ENGIE Group’s ESG Division, and Florence Clap, Head of the Biodiversity Policy programme at the French Committee of the IUCN.
